Electron MicroscopyHow does chemotherapy affect fertility?

Men:
  • Some drugs can lead to total absence of sperm, which may be transitory or permanent;
  • Some drugs may lead to genetic abnormalities of sperm (high sperm DNA fragmentation index) - which can prevent the formation of the embryo and / or fixation in the uterus. In addition, it increases the chance of premature abortions.
Women:
  • Some drugs can lead to premature ovarian failure or early menopause (which can also occur in young girls).

How does Radiation affect fertility?

Men:
  • Sperm cell formation can be affected by radiation therapy decreasing their number. This side effect may persist for up to 5 years after completion of treatment until it gets back to pretreatment condition.
Women:
  • Radiation therapy can cause irreversible damage to the ovaries, followed by ovarian failure;
  • Radiation therapy can decrease the volume of the uterine cavity and the blood flow, which may explain abortions within this group of patients.

  • To understand that the whole process will not delay or interfere with the cancer treatment;
  • To understand how the assisted reproduction techniques may help people to have children in the future;
